Changes to Ohio Bureau of Workers’ Compensation Effective July 1: What you need to know

The Bureau of Workers’ Compensation officially set base rates for Ohio employers this fiscal year, putting into effect a 6.3% reduction in overall rates beginning July 1st. This reduction is great news for businesses and at the Chamber we’re looking forward to more reductions following the implementation of the Bureau’s new prospective billing system.

Speaking to the billing change, Ohio BWC Administrator Stephen Buehrer said BWC has rolled-out a new web page that provides key information so employers can better understand how important this change is for them, as well as what efforts are being done to ensure the transition goes smoothly. This resource contains a fact sheet, important timelines to be aware of, as well as an email link for answers to any questions.

In addition to prospective billing, Mr. Buehrer also highlighted the success of this year’s safety grant programs in which nearly all of the $15 million designated to the program has been utilized, with an additional $15 million set for this coming fiscal year. Buehrer also hinted at an upcoming advertising campaign designed to get the word out to businesses that these helpful (and cost-saving) programs are available.

Are you aware of the BWC’s change to a new billing system next year and what this means for you? Employers should explore this website to make sure they are well-prepared for these upcoming changes.
