2020 Primary Candidates

The 2020 Primary Election falls on St Patrick’s Day next year, March 17, 2020. The filing deadline of 100 days prior to the election that candidates need to file to be on the ballot by was last Wednesday December 18.

This primary cycle is earlier this year, with the 2018 primary election having been held in May that year. So, candidates will have to brave the cold winter knocking on doors this time around in order to get to many voters.

After the filing deadline last week, our team at the Ohio Chamber has contacted county Boards of Elections across the state to learn who is officially running. We created a printable PDF of the candidates that have filed for U.S. Congress, State Court of Appeals, and the Ohio General Assembly.

This election cycle has already proven to be particularly interesting. A good chunk of candidates announced or filed to run very early, such as even before the biennial operating budget passed in July. The assumption is that President Donald Trump’s reelection campaign will do much of the lift for anyone with an “R” next to their name on the ballot, so most “safe” districts are all about the primary election. As you can see in the list above, there are a good handful of contested primaries in those districts.

Over the course of the primary season, I will be providing analysis on various races, the candidates running, and trend information on the constituents of those districts and their voting patterns. In the meantime, check out @probizpolitics on Twitter for all the 2020 Ohio Primary Election news.
